Ever since Covid-19, services have largely expanded into the online/virtual world, and therapy is no exception. Online therapy, known as Telehealth, can take place over the phone or on a video-call via applications like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and more. Online therapy looks a bit different than online therapy does, but it has various benefits. Let’s explore this option and learn more about it.
What Does Online Therapy Look Like?
If you choose to set up a counseling or therapy session via Telehealth, it will look a bit different compared to in-person services. First, the therapist and client will be in contact to set up a meeting date and time that works for both people. Once a meeting is set, you’ll have to make sure you have access to the software that will be used. Your therapist will let you know how it works, but you can also seek your own information and troubleshooting via an internet search.
When it is time for your session, try to find a private and comfortable space from which you can attend the meeting without distraction or discomfort. Here are some suggestions for how to make the most of your space:
Keep a box of tissues in reach. Emotions are normal in session, so make the space ready for that!
Grab a blanket in case you need some comfort.
Close the door if you can. Protecting your privacy can make it easier for you to feel safe in your space.
Don’t be afraid to fidget with something! It is normal to feel nervous or antsy, and your therapist won’t mind if you need to fidget with something to regulate yourself.
Once you join, your counselor/therapist can give you information about any more privacy concerns you might have. In session, virtual therapy is conducted the same way in-person sessions work. Your counselor will work together with you to set goals, learn more about you, give advice, ask questions, and more. The only difference here is that you aren’t in the same physical space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Now that we’ve covered some of the basics of online therapy, let’s explore some frequently asked questions. I’ve gathered these questions from various sites that you can visit for more information, including Genesis Counseling Center, Inner Body, and Therapy Connect.
Does it matter where I am?
Yes and no. Oftentimes, your provider will only be able to see clients who are physically in states that they are licensed to provide in. If you plan on taking a trip or moving, let your therapist know!
Try to find a private space. Life is crazy, so this may be a challenge, but it is a good thing to strive for.
How much does online therapy cost? Will my insurance cover it?
There are various services that provide online therapy, and prices vary depending on the company. You should expect costs to be anywhere from $60 to $250 per week. But, these are important questions to ask about before you start an online therapy journey.
Unfortunately, it depends! Before you start your treatment, talk to your provider and your insurance company.
What things can online therapy work for?
You and your therapist can talk about if online therapy is a good fit for your specific situation. Research has found that virtual therapy can be helpful with things like:
Anxiety
Depression
Trauma
Life transition struggles
Grief
Relationship struggles
Is virtual therapy appropriate for children?
The short answer is likely yes. Online therapy lets children remain in the environment that they are comfortable in, which may be helpful. However, it can be challenging for some children to remain engaged in online sessions.
What about privacy concerns?
If you are receiving treatment from a reputable company, they should utilize HIPAA compliant technology for virtual therapy sessions.
Each practice and company approaches these things differently, so be sure to ask this question before or during your first session! A reputable therapist should be open and honest about privacy concerns and how they are addressed.
